Monday was a disappointing day for American players at the Miami Open, as six U.S. representatives fell in the men’s and women’s singles competitions.
No. 3 seed Coco Gauff suffered a 6-4, 6-4 defeat to unseeded Magda Linette, while defending champion Danielle Collins was eliminated by top seed Aryna Sabalenka with the same scoreline. Amanda Anisimova also bowed out in straight sets, losing 6-1, 6-3 to Emma Raducanu, while Ashlyn Krueger fell 6-2, 7-6 to Olympic gold medalist Zheng Qinwen.
Gauff struggled with 12 double faults and 45 unforced errors in her loss to Linette, who secured her fifth career win against a top-five opponent. “It wasn’t great today,” Gauff admitted, per the WTA. “It hasn’t been great the last few weeks – I’m trying to figure that out.”
Linette, making just her second career WTA 1000 quarterfinal at 33, will next face No. 6 seed Jasmine Paolini.
Collins, meanwhile, was unable to break her losing streak against Sabalenka, suffering her seventh consecutive defeat against the Belarusian. Collins, who won her biggest career title in Miami last year, was outmatched by Sabalenka’s power and precision. Sabalenka will take on Zheng in the quarterfinals as she aims for her first Miami semifinal.
Elsewhere, Raducanu reached her first WTA 1000 quarterfinal with a dominant victory over No. 17 seed and Qatar Open champion Anisimova. It marks only the second time in her career that Raducanu has won four straight main draw matches, the first being her remarkable 2021 US Open triumph.
Next, Raducanu faces No. 4 seed Jessica Pegula—the only American woman to win on Monday and now the last U.S. female remaining in the tournament. Pegula comfortably defeated Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk 6-2, 6-3 to reach the Miami quarterfinals for the fourth consecutive year.
The losses extended to the men’s draw as well, with No. 16 seed Frances Tiafoe and Reilly Opelka both exiting the tournament. Their defeats, combined with No. 12 seed Tommy Paul’s loss on Sunday, made it a rough stretch for American men.
However, No. 3 seed Taylor Fritz provided a bright spot, securing a 7-5, 6-3 win over Denis Shapovalov to advance to the fourth round of a Masters 1000 event for the second consecutive time. Fritz will now take on Australian lucky loser Adam Walton for a quarterfinal spot.
Sebastian Korda and Brandon Nakashima had already secured spots in the round of 16. Nakashima will face Grigor Dimitrov, while Korda will challenge Gaël Monfils.
Tiafoe’s tournament run ended in a dramatic three-set battle, falling 7-6(11), 5-7, 6-2 to rising French star Arthur Fils, who fought through cramps to claim the victory. The 20-year-old, now a three-time Masters 1000 fourth-round qualifier, will meet top seed Alexander Zverev next.
Reflecting on his win, Fils said, “It was very tough. When I got into the third set, I was cramping and couldn’t find my rhythm. My serve was difficult, and I couldn’t jump, so I tried to relax and hit as strong as I could. Somehow, it worked,” per the ATP.
