Carlos Alcaraz has expressed that he does not support the legal action initiated by the Professional Tennis Players’ Association (PTPA) against the sport’s governing bodies and tours earlier this week. The PTPA, a players’ organization co-founded by Novak Djokovic, has filed lawsuits in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, accusing men’s and women’s tennis of being monopolized and of failing to prioritize player interests.

The lawsuit addresses several issues, including prize money distribution, the current ranking system and tournament calendar, the investigative procedures of the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), and name, image, and likeness (NIL) compensation. The complaint, which calls for a jury trial, lists twelve players as plaintiffs, including PTPA co-founder Vasek Pospisil and 2022 Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios. The group also plans to file similar lawsuits in the EU and UK.

“It was surprising for me because no one had informed me,” Alcaraz said on Wednesday, according to Reuters. “I saw on social media that a quote from one of my press conferences was used in the documents, and I wasn’t even aware of it. I honestly don’t support that letter.”

The PTPA’s legal action targets the ATP, WTA, ITF, and ITIA. While the ATP and WTA have pledged to strongly defend their positions, the ITIA acknowledged the lawsuit, and the ITF said it would review and respond in due course.

Although the PTPA claims strong support from over 250 top-ranked players, Alcaraz distanced himself from the action during a press conference at the Miami Open. “There are parts I agree with and others I don’t,” said the world No. 3. “But the most important thing is that I don’t support what was done.”

Alcaraz, who won the Miami Open in 2022, is set to begin his 2025 campaign at the tournament against Belgium’s David Goffin on Friday.
